The movie ‘Invictus’ which I thought to be a usual sporting saga turned out to inspire me for a lifetime. The filmed is based upon the book “Playing he Enemy” by John Carlin focusing on socio-economic conditions of South Africa and first year of Prez. Nelson Mandela in year 1995.
“We need inspiration”, declared by Nelson Mandela in the ceremonial tale of 1995 Rugby World cup held in post-apartheid independent South Africa. The movie features Mandela’s first year as South African President playing out in scarred by apartheid and uncertain future. The genius of Mandela was in somehow using Rugby as unifying force to form a united rainbow nation.
Special mention to Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon to play out such remarkable characters on screen with superb direction by Clint Eastwood.
The WE Henley poem mentioned in the film stayed with me for a very long time and has helped me tide through good and bad times. Sharing the classic poem with you all for inspiration.
Invictus
Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.
In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeoning of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.
Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds and shall find me unafraid.
It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate,
I am the captain of my soul.

Your point of view caught my eye and was very interesting. Thanks. I have a question for you.
